Mad Cow Rally 2009

The morning dawned light bright and sunny……. somewhere. In Bury St. Edmunds it was raining, hard. It was also very very cold which combined with the gale force wind blowing across the camp site had even caused the penguins to shut up shop and fly south for winter, presumably by Easy Jet.(other airlines are available). How do I know? Simple, there were none to be seen anywhere.

Into this maelstrom the brave few started the job of getting the site ready for the 2009 Bury MAG Mad Cow Rally. The booking in tent was put up and at midday the horizontal rain turned to snow, which was nice. As we waited for the winds to fall enough to put the big tents up we huddled round the space heat heaters contemplating the meaning of life and eating the chips bought for us by our Marianne. What a saviour. It was without doubt the worst weather we have ever had to put up marquees in but by mid afternoon the skies cleared and by comparison it was very pleasant. People were turning up to camp as well coming from all over. Brummie Dave being of mention as not only did he camp but helped us put up stuff as well. Star.

I guess due to the weather Friday night was quite quiet though we still managed to bounce around and have a good time to the sounds of HRD (Herbs Rock Disco) and the Friday night band Backlash, played a great set and kept everyone happy until close of play. The hall cleared and it was all outside for the BBQ more beer and polite enlightened conversation on the topics of the day. (Read alcohol addled nonsense).

The morning came around far too soon for most me included but it was very nice to see the blue sky and sunshine glinting poetically off the mud encrusted motorcycles. We normally do a ride out but due to a bit of poor planning on my part and less than usual numbers early in the day Rick and Iwent for a very pleasant bimble. Others wandered up to the town centre to sample the many bars and taverns that Bury has to offer.

The crowds started to reassemble at dusk and we played a couple of silly games (thanks to those who took part), HRD then took up the baton and our friends FUBAR played a truly storming set up to half time where the raffle and trophies were sorted out.

Tail of woe went to went to Andy Tanner, for being called into work in the small hours of Saturday morning to fix some machinery. Now bearing in mined that you should not operate machinery after consuming “medication”, what is the requirement re alcohol and said machine I wonder? He got there by bragging a lift with a far more sober party goer, not only the fact that he went to work won him the honour, but it cost him £40 for a taxi to get back to our site in time for breakfast, still pissed. Landladies choice went to a well deserved Harley, we never did find out the owners name as the land lady just gave us the bikes registration number, well it was either that or Charlie’s bright pink camouflage? tent that she liked. Charley you are a sick puppy. Longest distance female has been lost in the void between Herb’s ears or on that bit of paper he had and can’t find anymore, anyone spot a trend hear? Lass you know who you are and hats doffed to you. The male distance award went to Brummie Dave along with best fancy dress, he really excelled him self this year, see photo, close runner up was Vargo and yes we do worry about him. Best club turn out went to Barking and Eastham District MCC, proving that there are in the days of an aging biker community we still have no more common sense than a bunch of lords in a pub. Winners got a cow pattern metal tankards expertly done by Sean.

This years MAD COW Award went to Ekquire Motorcycles who have for many years always supported our events with abounding generosity so they got the engraved toilet seat which is now being put to good use. A big thanks to all our sponsors: Nick of 100 % Biker fame (huge amounts of stuff) Tony and Karen, St. Edmunds Guest House yes if you don’t want to camp there is an option, Bad Ant, Cave of Delights, Marsy, Max Moto Guzzi and Aprilia dealers, Red Shift Motorcycles Thaigemstone.co.uk, Eccles Racing, Nighthawk Leather and last but not least Shan Tedder. Big Big thanks also to our hosts Stella and her bar staff of the British Sugar Sports and Social Club for there sterling work over the course of the weekend we really cannot do it without them.

A special award was given this year to extend the ever encroaching udders? of the Moo Crew so in addition to the Devon branch headed up by John we now have the aforementioned Brummie Dave who was given one of Herb’s old and smelly hoodies, and is now the head of Bury MAG Birmingham division, now perhaps he wont pinch ours when ever the chance presents its self, And thus an empire was forged. A big thank you to everyone who turned up in what was less than perfect conditions we hope you had a good time we did even packing away in the pouring rain. Did I mention the bad weather?

All profits go to MAG and they will be getting £1600 or so from as a result of your great generosity. Keeping motorcycling as free as we can from increasing legislation is a full time job done by a lot of part time people so please support MAG events when ever you can. Keep safe and we hope to see you all at our summer rally or around and about at your do’s.
